ABOUT
Robert ‘Doc’ Barham has been writing and performing professional stand up comedy since 1987. When Doc was a boy, his father told jokes to the family around the dinner table every night. Doc remembered his father's jokes and then told them to his elementary school friends, creating first unofficial stand up comedy show.
He made his official start in comedy by producing a weekly stand up comedy show, The Wits End Comedy Club, while majoring in Theatre Arts at the School Of Performing Arts at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia. The comedy show was a genuine success, and in its second year, relocated to another venue downtown adjacent to campus. Soon, touring professional stand up comedians from around the United States were performing at the club. Today, some of those comedians are the biggest names in comedy. Doc was also DJ and host of his own humorous alternative music show at the university radio station, WUVT FM. While still in school, he was invited to be an opening act for Ellen Degeneres at an on campus taping of HBO’s Comic Relief. After the show, Doc met Ellen and she told him he was “funny”. He decided to make a career of it and become a professional stand up comedian. He returned home to Northern Virginia to begin touring, performing at comedy clubs, universities and companies around the United States and Canada.
Within a short time, he was a headliner. When he received an invitation from professional comedian friends who had moved from the Washington DC Area to the Bay Area, Doc relocated to the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco. His agent, Rich Miller of RCM Entertainment, helped him land an audition at the world famous Melrose Improv in Hollywood, and from a field of over two thousand comedians who auditioned, he was one of twelve comedians chosen to perform in the New Faces Of Comedy Showcase at the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, Canada that year. While on tour, he recorded a live sold out show at the Funnybone in Boise, Idaho which led to the release of his first stand up comedy album, Global Village Idiot. He was asked to become a recording art for The Laughing Hyena Records label. His lifelong interest in personal growth and development motivated him to become a master hypnotist, NLP master and certified hypnotherapist which led to an additional performer's role as a headlining professional stage hypnotist. In 2001, he moved to Los Angeles to further his career and continue performing internationally. In 2016, he moved back to his home state of Virginia. There, he continued his education and received more than a fifteen certifications in television and radio production arts.
Doc has performed with such well known artists as Franklin Ajaye, Larry Amaros, Carlos Alazraqui, Jeff Altman, Dave Atell, Heywood Banks, Lewis Black, Joe Bolster, Jim Breuer, Drew Carey, Rodney Carrington, Tommy Chong, Mark Curry, Ellen Degeneres, Dustin Diamond, Will Durst, Adam Ferara, Charles Fleischer, Sue Ford, John Fugelsang, Jamie Foxx, Greg Geraldo, Paul Gilmartin, Judy Gold, Anthony Griffith, Mitch Hedberg, Darryl Hammond, DL Hughley, Kevin James, Rich Jeni, Jake Johannson, Mario Joyner, Mac King, Kozak The Magician, Carl Labove, George Lopez, Kathleen Madigan, Mark Maron, Steve McGrew, Kevin Meany, Flip Orley, Tammy Pescetelli, Marc Price, Paula Poundstone, Larry Reeb, Brian Regan, John Riggi, Craig Robinson, Rondell Sheridan, Ron Shock, Bobby Slayton, Margaret Smith, Judy Tenuta, Chris Titus, Gary Valentine, Thea Vidale, Ron White, George Wallace, Harland Williams, Tim Wilson, and John Wing.
